History of the Department of Data Science and Visualization

The Department of Data Science and Visualization has a rich history, which began with the formation of the Department of Computer Graphics and Library Informatics. This department was founded in 1994 as part of the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics and was led by Dr. József Szabó.

In July 2003, Dr. Sándor Bácsó became the head of the department. Later, the introduction of the library information science BSc program necessitated splitting the department. As a result, the Department of Computer Graphics and Image Processing and the non-independent Department of Library Informatics were founded on 1 January 2008. The Department of Computer Graphics and Image Processing has been led by Dr. András Hajdu since July 2011.

The continuous development of computer science has brought new challenges and opportunities, which have required the department to expand its focus to broader areas of data science. Accordingly, the department was renamed in June 2021 and is now called the Department of Data Science and Visualization, which better reflects the activity areas of its members.

The department members are mainly engaged in teaching and research activities in the following areas: data processing, data analysis, data visualization, machine learning, deep learning, image processing, geoinformatics, geometry, and computer graphics.
